Forming pottery by throwing on a wheel requires two hands, with your elbow(s) anchored against your body. You will be seated and bend over the pottery wheel for several minutes at a time, for a total of approximately 30-60 minutes. The pottery wheel is operated using a foot pedal that can be on either side. The pottery wheels and the stool seats in front of them are in close proximity to one another. A separate table with high stools will be in the area where you do the glazing. The studio is on the ground level with accessible, all-gender facilities. All instructions will be verbal with a demonstration and possible hands-on assistance.

DRESS CODE:
- Please wear clothes and shoes that are comfortable and that you feel ok to get dirty in (Studio outfit).
- As a general safety rule, closed-toe shoes are better than open-toe shoes.
- No loose dangling jewelry pieces, hair, or sleeves.
- Tie hair back.

Firing Services included: first (bisque) and second (glaze) firing, provided by the studio. You will be working with low-firing clay.
2-Hour Art Media CE Course Agenda: An instructor will teach you how to throw pottery on the wheel. Each person will be given 2 lbs of clay, with 1 lb enough to make a small piece of pottery, such as a mug, a bowl, or a vase. Instructions include centering, opening, pulling, and forming a piece of clay pottery into the shape and form of your choice. After throwing, each person will have time to decorate and glaze (paint) the pottery with underglaze. Participants will have the opportunity to meet other art therapists, tour the studio and gallery, eat snacks, and learn about IATA and board activity from Julie and Shan. Allotted time includes cleanup.
CE credits:
This ART MEDIA class will qualify for 2 art therapy CEs issued by IATA according to the 2026 ATCB Board Certification rule.

HOW TO GET YOUR 2 CE ART MEDIA CREDITS

- CE CERTIFICATE: Certification of Completion indicating 2 Art Media CEs issued by the Illinois Art Therapy Association will be given to those who fully attended the in-person event.
- You have to retain the CE certification record for your credential renewal and CE verification. We won't be able to reissue it once the event is over.
- ATTENDANCE: Because this is a CE event, you must attend all the allotted hours. You will have to SIGN IN and SIGN OUT for our CE record-keeping. NO PARTIAL CREDIT CAN BE GIVEN.
- PICK UP FINISHED WORK: You will provide your contact information for the studio to inform you of artwork pickup. It will take the studio a few weeks to complete the firing. You must personally return to pick up your work. Mailing of your artwork is available with a $25 fee that you will have to pay the studio directly and arrange separately.
