Message from IATA PresidentDear IATA Members,
I look forward to serving a second term and continuing to serve our Illinois art therapy community. Over the course of two years, IATA has been working diligently to build up our membership, reconnect with our educational institutions and gain a clearer, deeper understanding of what art therapists need. I want to share my appreciation for our members who continue to renew their membership, thank our new members who have joined over the last two years, and express gratitude for all art therapists who have taken time to speak with myself and the board. Without our fellow art therapists, IATA would not be able to accomplish what we have. I want to take a moment to share some of our successes and where we are headed during the 2024-2026 term. In 2023, we removed the requirement of having to hold an AATA membership in order to be an IATA member. By doing so, we have seen a 22% increase in new members. We have re-engaged with our academic institutions and have student representatives from two of the three schools. We are also seeing a significant increase in student and new professional memberships. IATA is committed to growing our membership and removing cost barriers to art therapists whenever possible. For programming, we hosted two in-person networking events at Dandelion Therapeutic Art Center. Due to how well the events were received we are working on increasing these in person events and expanding to the suburbs. In 2023, IATA became a NBCC approved Continuing Education Provider. IATA has also provided free events to support students understand the licensing and credentialing process post-graduation. We are committed to providing increased networking opportunities and continuing education events over the next two years. As many of you know, IATA has focused a significant amount of our energy on art therapy licensing. We provided a survey to learn more about people’s questions, concerns, and thoughts. We took the survey information and have created a page on our website where people can learn more about our efforts with the art therapy license. The survey results inform our educational material, what we provide on our website and let us know what is most important to art therapists. Unexpectedly, at the end of 2023, we have submitted an art therapy license legislation with the support of Representative Janet Yang Rohr’s office. Representative Rohr’s office sought IATA out to collaborate on increasing mental health care access across Illinois through art therapists having an independent license. Her office has been helpful in educating us on how we can also receive insurance reimbursement through amending existing legislation. The board is excited about the potential of following music therapists in not only having an independent license and receiving insurance reimbursement for our valuable work. IATA is committed to advocating on behalf of art therapists across all of Illinois. The past two years have been challenging, exciting, and deeply rewarding. I want to thank our board members for their dedication and commitment to IATA. Without them, we would not be able to accomplish what we have in the past two years. I look forward to continuing our work, building on our successes and connecting with art therapists across the state.
